What is scratchboard?
Scratchboard is a subtractive medium, using abrasive tools to etch the top of the surface of black Indian ink to expose the secondary layer of white kaolin clay underneath. A variety of tools are used: scalpel blades, tatoo needles and fibreglass brushes. After etching, the artwork is painted with inks.
