Greetings to all our newsletter subscribers. Spring is finally here, and after the heavy rains in the beautiful Nelson region, we’re very pleased to see the sun. It’s been great to welcome new and returning visitors to the gallery from across the country, local residents and overseas. Everyone has one thing in common – they love New Zealand art! As we journey toward warmer days and longer daylight hours, we’d like to tell you about some exciting events coming up at the gallery.

Upcoming Exhibition

Waimea Intermediate School Student Art Exhibition 14-22 November

Young & Talented Student Art Exhibition

Protean Art will host an exhibition of fantastic art work by students from Waimea Intermediate School in Richmond, Nelson. Students will be showcasing artwork that includes paintings, sculptures, and mixed media works. Lots to interest everyone. Some of the students work will be for sale with proceeds going towards the students and a charity for adults and children with learning challenges.

Many thanks to Emma Panting, the student’s art teacher and professional artist, and Jo Townsend, Head of Technology, for collaborating with us on this exciting exhibition. It’s great to give students the opportunity to showcase their work in a gallery setting and we hope many of you will visit the gallery and enjoy their artistic achievements.

What’s in a name?

We often get asked what Protean means and why we chose the name for the gallery.

Protean means to change shape and form easily and frequently. It has many positive connotations including flexibility, adaptability and versatility. The word derives from one of the Greek gods, Proteus, who was a God of the Sea. Legend has it that to avoid answering difficult questions, Proteus would frequently change shape. A very handy skill to have!

Why did we choose protean as a name for our gallery?

We think that art is about taking subject matter and then changing its form and shape using whichever medium the artist chooses to work with. We also like that Proteus was a God of the Sea and our gallery is close to the stunning Tahunanui Beach.

Many of our visitors think of the beautiful proteas flower when they see the gallery name. From time to time, we have fresh proteas in the gallery for our visitors to enjoy.

Events to look out for…

Nelson Arts Festival Night Vision Tour Thursday 20 October. Galleries in Nelson CBD and Protean Art in Tahunanui will be open from 5pm to 9pm. A great opportunity to browse our local galleries at a leisurely pace, and appreciate a myriad of stunning art.

One Year Anniversary of Protean Art, Friday 21 October. We’ll have cake in the gallery for visitors to celebrate our first anniversary. Do come and enjoy the celebratory day with us.
