Secondary Art Market is Buzzing!

Melting Moments 1 - Bill Hammond

From time to time visitors to the gallery want to know more information about selling an artwork from their private collection. The secondary art market in New Zealand and overseas is buzzing. According to the Ministry of Culture and Heritage, the secondary art market more than doubled in value in 2021, and was estimated to be worth $67 million, up from $31 million in 2020.

Depending on the artist, some works can achieve very high sums at auction. Recent record prices include Melting Moments I by Bill Hammond which sold for $1.7 million in 2023, and Reverie Ena te Papatahi, Nga Puhi by C F Goldie, which sold for $1.8 million.

If you are interested in valuing an artwork from your private collection, these auction houses are a good place to start NZ Art Broker International Art Centre Art + Object

Just to note there is an artist royalty resale scheme that will be operational by the end of 2024. For more information about this please check out Artist Royalty Resale Scheme

And for all NZ art collectors out there, we have some highly collectable artworks at Protean Art from established and emerging artists. For more information about our artists and artwork, check out Protean Art Artists , or pop in to the gallery for a chat with Sue, our Gallery Director.
